HBO Max Europe: Upcoming Originals & Thrilling Announcements (2025)

Bold claim: HBO Max is expanding local powerhouses in Europe, and the lineup proves the platform is doubling down on region-specific truth, drama, and daring storytelling.

HBO Max revealed new launch plans for key European markets, including Italy and Germany, signaling deeper investment in locally produced originals. In tandem, Warner Bros. Discovery disclosed a robust slate of upcoming local series and documentaries to entice prospective subscribers with fresh, regionally relevant content.

Among the announced offerings from Germany is 4 Blocks Zero, a prequel to the acclaimed gangster drama 4 Blocks, and Banksters, a heist series inspired by a real event—both produced by W&B Television. In addition, a 2026 documentary from Beetz Brothers will recount one of Germany’s most famous robberies: the theft of the ‘Big Maple Leaf’ gold coin from Berlin’s Bode Museum.

Creators of Netflix’s Dark are also contributing to HBO Max’s European push. Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the minds behind 1899, will develop a thriller series for HBO Max that reimagines the dark stories of Struwwelpeter as lethal, cinematic cautionary tales. Struwwelpeter, the 1845 children’s book by Heinrich Hoffmann, has long unsettled German-speaking audiences with ten moral-focused stories about misbehavior, including the titular tale of a dirty, pampered boy who earns social rejection.

In Italy, HBO Max’s local originals will extend beyond drama. One title revisits the 2011 murder case of Melania Rea, with Maria Esposito portraying Rea; the series promises an unflinching look at a fractured family, a scrutinizing community, and a media-fueled Italian justice system. A separate premiere is Marco Bellocchio’s Portobello, marking HBO Max’s first Italian original. Starring Fabrizio Gifuni, the series chronicles the controversial, real-life trial of Italian TV host Enzo Tortora as he fights to clear his name.

Rounding out the Italian slate are ongoing docuseries projects, including Gina Lollobrigida: Diva Contesa, which tracks the legacy battle around cinema icon Gina Lollobrigida amid intense family dynamics. Another forthcoming docuseries, Saman, centers on the poignant, perilous pursuit of freedom by a young Pakistani woman punished by her family for resisting an arranged marriage.

These announcements come as HBO Max positions itself to compete more aggressively in Europe by blending crime thrillers, biographical dramas, and human-rights–driven storytelling grounded in real events. The questions for viewers are many: Will these localized narratives resonate beyond their national borders? How will the platform balance sensationalism with responsible portrayals of sensitive subjects? And as these projects unfold, which voices and perspectives will steer the conversation in European markets? Would these trends influence how other streaming platforms approach regional content in the years ahead?
