I have an awesome Low-Carb Recipe Collection, from some of my Favorite Bloggy Friends, to share with you today! But first I want to talk to you a little about the changes I’m making in my diet and some of the reasons why I’m making those changes.
I mentioned several weeks ago that I was working on making some changes in my diet to improve my overall health. Since that time I’ve been doing even more research and wavering between a balance of Paleo and Low-Carb eating. Both have one very important thing in common and that’s they omit grains from your diet.
Recently I saw a small portion of a Dr. Oz. show with Dr. David Perlmutter, a neurologist, as a guest. Dr. Perlmutter has done some research with results suggesting that carbohydrates are a cause of Alzheimer’s, Dementia, ADHD, Anxiety, Chronic Headaches and Depression. Basically Dr. Perlmutter believes that grains are destroying your brain. He goes on to say that this is not only the unhealthy carbs but the healthy ones like whole grains as well. Keep in mind I am summarizing to the extreme here. There was a lot of information in the show and I would definitely suggest doing some additional research if you feel you’re having problems in the area of memory. If you’re interested in reading more about his research and suggestions he does have a book explaining it in detail that you can check out on Amazon – Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar—Your Brain’s Silent Killers.
You may wonder why I’m mentioning Dr. Perlmutters book and I’m getting to that right now. For the past year I have very often half jokingly mentioned to my family on numerous occasions that I was going to be one of the unlucky people who developed early onset Alzheimer’s. I often cannot find the word I want to use or any word that even fits, I forget what things are or how to use things that I should know with ease and I do not have many memories of my childhood or worse yet my children’s childhood. Although I joke about this with my children it’s honestly quite scary! So, when I saw the segment on Dr. Oz. I was super excited and wondered if that could be my issue. I can’t say yet if it is because I am still in the baby stage of changing my eating habits but I’m anxious to find out if it improves. Dr. Perlmutters mentioned that it is completely reversible with change of diet so I’m hopeful. I do believe that diet plays a huge part in our overall health in ways that we don’t necessarily even consider.
What do you think about diet impacting your health in other ways beyond weight?
