Does Virginia have open enrollment for public schools? ›

Virginia offers K–12 students and their families several types of school choice, including a private school choice program, charter schools, magnet schools, home schooling and intra-district public school choice via an open enrollment policy.

Virginia Virtual Academy (VAVA) is a tuition-free, full-time online public school program. We're dedicated to inspiring and empowering students in grades K–12 through an education experience tailored to each child's needs.

Who: All children who turn five years old by September 30th up through age 18 are required by Virginia law to be enrolled in public school, private school, or state-approved home school. Generally, students may enroll in school up until the age of 20 or until they graduate².

Discovery K12 is an online platform and curriculum for independent homeschoolers. The curriculum is free for pre-k to twelfth grade, and includes all major subjects. You may use our curriculum any way you like: part time, full time and supplement to it.

A reasonable estimate would be about $250-350 per child, including games, software, and books. You can keep your bill down by selecting your materials from a variety of publishers. Some or all of these materials can be purchased used at about a thirty- to fifty-percent savings.

Parents may home school “when the requirements...of the Code have been satisfied.” The Code requires parents who home instruct to provide their local school division with: Evidence of having met one of the criteria for providing home instruction (see "Criteria for Providing Home Instruction” below)

Upon approval of an initial out-of-zone request by the principal of the zoned school or upon receipt of a renewal out-of-zone request, the principal of the receiving school will then review the Student Placement Request Form and necessary documentation and may approve the out-of-zone request based upon space available ...

In Virginia, while a transfer within your district may be possible, transfers between districts are generally not available and may cost.
